Neck Pain Q&A

What is neck pain?

Neck pain refers to pain in the cervical spine, the uppermost section of your spinal column. It’s one of the most common types of pain, remarkably affecting 8 out of 10 people at some point during their lifetime.

At any given time, up to 20% of all people have neck pain — and, for many, that neck pain is quite severe or even debilitating.

What are the symptoms of neck pain?

Neck pain can affect any area from the base of your skull to your upper back. It may radiate to other areas, causing upper back, head, arm, or shoulder pain. You may also experience headaches, facial pain, or numbness and tingling in your arm and hand as well.

Some people have to change their sleeping routine, work, or everyday activities because neck pain makes it impossible to move normally. Movements that seem simple and easy, like looking down or to the side, can become impossible if you have chronic neck pain.

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain can come from many sources, including:

  • Cervical disc herniation
  • Nerve entrapment
  • Cervical disc degeneration (spondylosis)
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Muscle strains
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Many problems in other parts of the body can appear as neck pain, so the cause isn’t always readily apparent. At Focused Pain Relief, Dr. Foreit can expertly evaluate your cervical spine and determine the underlying factors involved in your neck pain.

How is neck pain treated?

Focused Pain Relief emphasizes non-opioid and nonsurgical methods of pain relief. Long-term use of opioids for chronic pain can have various adverse physical effects, including drug dependency. Surgery is highly invasive and might fail to address the cause of your neck pain.

Focused Pain Relief offers a variety of effective no-downtime pain relief treatments, with your specific treatment targeted for the root cause of the pain. Some of the main treatment approaches include:

  • Hands-on osteopathic manipulation to resolve structural issues in your cervical spine
  • Non-surgical spinal decompression to  — ease pressure on individual discs and nerves

Dr. Foreit has extensive advanced training in osteopathic manipulation and other nonsurgical approaches. Focused Pain Relief is one of only two practices in the state of NW Indiana to offer both lumbar and cervical spinal decompression using the state-of-the-art DRX9000® True Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression® system.
